Womens Health

The fix: Go nuts. Peanuts, hazelnuts, and walnuts are loaded with vitamin E, an antioxidant that bolsters the immune system, which gets run down when you're running around. They're also chock-full of B vitamins, which prepare your body for physical ramifications of stress like high blood pressure and off-kilter hormones. Nuts are also a great food source of arginine, an amino acid that improves blood flow—to help you get from dead tired to orgasmic. You need only a handful per day, so sprinkle them on yogurt, salads, or oatmeal—or just snack on them plain.

Oh, how true!

The problem: Narrowing arteries
Heart disease scores as a top-three killer of women in this age group.
The fix: Grab a handful of grapes every day. Antioxidants in red grape skins have been linked to lower LDL cholesterol and a lowered risk of clogged arteries. A glass of red wine is beneficial too. In a Spanish study, scientists found that red wine significantly reduced markers of arterial inflammation. The booze also helps prevent clots, just as a daily aspirin does. Cheers!

No Joint European Strategy On Banks

By Edward Cody
Washington Post Foreign Service Sunday, October 5, 2008; Page A01
PARIS, Oct. 4 -- The leaders of Europe's four largest economic powers vowed Saturday to protect their banks from the continuing reverberations of the increasingly global financial crisis but could not agree on a common Europe-wide strategy.
Unlike the United States, which last week committed $700 billion in government money to shoring up Wall Street, Europe plans to continue dealing with its financial problems on a case-by-case basis. That approach, which has involved tens of billions of dollars at a step, is complicated by the transnational presence of so many large European financial institutions.
But the European leaders did call for a global economic summit by year's end aimed at revamping the international financial system, which is a legacy of a conference held at Bretton Woods, N.H., in the waning months of World War II. [Read more...]

Discarded medications end up in drinking water

U.S. hospitals and long-term care facilities annually flush millions of pounds of unused pharmaceuticals down the drain, pumping contaminants into America's drinking water, according to an ongoing Associated Press investigation.

These discarded medications are expired, spoiled, over-prescribed or unneeded. Some are simply unused because patients refuse to take them, can't tolerate them or die with nearly full 90-day supplies of multiple prescriptions on their nightstands.

Few of the country's 5,700 hospitals and 45,000 long-term care homes keep data on the pharmaceutical waste they generate. Based on a small sample, though, the AP was able to project an annual national estimate of at least 250 million pounds of pharmaceuticals and contaminated packaging, with no way to separate out the drug volume. HELP!

The story
Federal and state officials will make sure consumers don't get gouged by gas price increases in the wake of Hurricane Ike, President Bush said Saturday.

A large number of refineries shut down on the Gulf Coast ahead of the storm, pushing prices up in some regions.

In a brief televised statement, Bush said the Environmental Protection Agency waivers on certain reformulated gasolines were suspended Friday night to make it easier for imports to get into U.S. markets. [Readmore---]

West Nile Virus Makes Its First Victims in the US

Stay Alert! West Nile Virus Makes Its First Victims in the US

With the return of summer, the risk of getting infected with West Nile virus is higher than in any other season of the year.

There were already confirmed eight human cases in five states, namely in Arizona, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention informed. Also, there have been reported animal cases in nine states, including Alabama, California, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, South Carolina, Texas and Utah.

West Nile virus was first spotted in New York in 1999 and has since spread westward, ultimately appearing in every state. Last year, the U.S. confronted with no less than 2,630 human cases. The number of West Nile infections is low this year, but the season benefiting infection with the virus is only at the beginning. Also, mosquito population, which is responsible for West Nile Virus spreading, is on the rise.

Therefore, people should be more involved in the fight against mosquitoes helping authorities to spot places benefiting mosquitoes’ growth. These places include abandoned houses or pools. Also, they should report any dead corvid, birds such as crows, magpies, ravens, jays and raptors. These birds usually die after being infected with West Nile Virus. That’s why they can be warning signs that mosquitoes in the area could be carrying the virus. Horses can also be carriersof the virus.

U.K becoming abortion capital of the world.

Britain will become the "abortion capital of the world" in the next decade, according to prolife campaigners.

They say our termination rate is already higher than any other western European country.

If the current trend continues, Britain is on course to overtake the U.S. and Australia as the place where the greatest proportion of pregnancies are terminated.

Nadine Dorries MP is leading calls for a cut in the upper time limit for so-called "social" abortions from 24 weeks to 20.

She said this would stop 2,500 terminations a year taking place.

"We have reached the point where we need to pull back on abortion," she said.

"If we don't there is no question that we will overtake America in the next couple of years, making us the abortion capital of the world."

Mrs Dorries plans to table an amendment to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill in the Commons this month.

Her campaign to cut the upper limit from 24 to 20 weeks is said to have the support of 200 MPs.

However, it will only be able to overturn the law if at least 200 others abstain.

In England and Wales, there were 193,700 abortions last year - a rate of 18.3 per 1,000 women aged 15 to 44. In the U.S., the rate has been falling steadily for almost three decades, and it now stands at 19.4 per 1,000 women.

In France the figure is 14.5, in Germany it is 7.2 and Italy 9.1 - all lower than the UK.

The only other major Western country with a higher abortion rate than Britain is Australia - but, like the U.S., the level there is currently declining.

However, there are high rates of abortion in former Communist countries such as Ukraine.

Peter Saunders, of the Christian Medical Fellowship, said there had been an "awakening of the public conscience over abortion" in the U.S.

"By contrast in the UK we have embraced ever more tightly the same tired formula of values-free sex education, condoms and more abortion services," he added. Continue reading---

GWBush plea

Mr. Bush arrived in Saudi Arabia from Jerusalem, where he spent the past several days celebrating that country’s 60th anniversary. The Saudi visit marks another anniversary — seventy five years since the first formal American-Saudi diplomatic relations.
On Friday, the White House announced a series of initiatives meant to increase the partnership between the United States and Saudi Arabia on energy and fighting terrorism.
Among the steps: Saudi Arabia will join 70 partner nations of a global initiative to fight nuclear terrorism, and will join more than 85 countries participating in an initiative intended to reduce the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
In exchange, the White House said, the United States will help the Saudis develop civilian nuclear power, as well as new infrastructure to safeguard its energy supplies.

Founder and Chief Executive Jerry Yang says that Microsoft's Jan. 31 bid, worth $44.6 billion at the time, "substantially undervalues" Yahoo. In a statement released Feb. 11, Yahoo's board cited the company's "global brand, large worldwide audience, significant recent investments in advertising platforms and future growth prospects, free cash flow and earnings potential, as well as our substantial unconsolidated investments." Microsoft, the argument goes, is seizing on the drop in Yahoo's stock to buy the company on the cheap. Read more---

Chinese dumplings containing pesticide have sparked a food scare in Japan.

Ten people, including a mother and her four children, have become ill after eating meat dumplings that authorities believe contained pesticide.

The company that imported the dumplings has issued an immediate nationwide recall for all food produced by the same Chinese factory.

Virginia Commonwealth University researchers asked 232 sickle cell patients to keep diaries.

The Annals of Internal Medicine study found many experienced daily pain - but many tried to cope with it at home, rather than seeking medical help.

Previous research has assumed that, if patients did not seek help, then they were not in pain.
