Obama team sees stimulus advancing health reform
In the legislation passed late Friday, Congress approved spending about $19 billion over the coming years on electronic health records and an additional $1.1 billion on research comparing which treatments work best for a particular disease.Also, the bill sets aside about $1 billion for a "prevention and wellness fund." About $300 million of that money would provide additional immunizations. Most of the rest of that money will go to state and communities to help them tackle smoking, obesity and various preventable health problems.
"This represents the beginning steps of the president's health reform vision," said Jenny Backus, a spokeswoman for the Health and Human Services Department. "It's designed to get relief to people who need it most and to do everything we can to bring down the cost of health care, and improve access and quality." [readmore...

Jorge "Papito" Serguera who banned the Beatles is 'DEAD'
HAVANA (Reuters) - The man who banned the Beatles from the communist-run island's radio and television stations has died, state television said on Tuesday.
Jorge "Papito" Serguera, who at the time was president of the Cuban Institute of Radio and Television, pulled Beatles music from the airwaves in the 1970s even though he later admitted he enjoyed listening to it in private.
Serguera, who was 76 when he died, said in a 2001 interview he was following orders from high government officials who viewed the British band's music as a threat to the revolution.
But he was viewed as an architect of a general cultural crackdown that dampened dissent and marginalized many for their beliefs or sexuality.[read more]

Discarded medications end up in drinking water
U.S. hospitals and long-term care facilities annually flush millions of pounds of unused pharmaceuticals down the drain, pumping contaminants into America's drinking water, according to an ongoing Associated Press investigation.
These discarded medications are expired, spoiled, over-prescribed or unneeded. Some are simply unused because patients refuse to take them, can't tolerate them or die with nearly full 90-day supplies of multiple prescriptions on their nightstands.
Few of the country's 5,700 hospitals and 45,000 long-term care homes keep data on the pharmaceutical waste they generate. Based on a small sample, though, the AP was able to project an annual national estimate of at least 250 million pounds of pharmaceuticals and contaminated packaging, with no way to separate out the drug volume. U.K becoming abortion capital of the world.
Britain will become the "abortion capital of the world" in the next decade, according to prolife campaigners.
They say our termination rate is already higher than any other western European country.
If the current trend continues, Britain is on course to overtake the U.S. and Australia as the place where the greatest proportion of pregnancies are terminated.
Nadine Dorries MP is leading calls for a cut in the upper time limit for so-called "social" abortions from 24 weeks to 20.
She said this would stop 2,500 terminations a year taking place.
"We have reached the point where we need to pull back on abortion," she said.
"If we don't there is no question that we will overtake America in the next couple of years, making us the abortion capital of the world."
Mrs Dorries plans to table an amendment to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill in the Commons this month.
Her campaign to cut the upper limit from 24 to 20 weeks is said to have the support of 200 MPs.
However, it will only be able to overturn the law if at least 200 others abstain.
In England and Wales, there were 193,700 abortions last year - a rate of 18.3 per 1,000 women aged 15 to 44. In the U.S., the rate has been falling steadily for almost three decades, and it now stands at 19.4 per 1,000 women.
In France the figure is 14.5, in Germany it is 7.2 and Italy 9.1 - all lower than the UK.
The only other major Western country with a higher abortion rate than Britain is Australia - but, like the U.S., the level there is currently declining.
However, there are high rates of abortion in former Communist countries such as Ukraine.
Peter Saunders, of the Christian Medical Fellowship, said there had been an "awakening of the public conscience over abortion" in the U.S.

Mr. Bush arrived in Saudi Arabia from Jerusalem, where he spent the past several days celebrating that country’s 60th anniversary. The Saudi visit marks another anniversary — seventy five years since the first formal American-Saudi diplomatic relations.
On Friday, the White House announced a series of initiatives meant to increase the partnership between the United States and Saudi Arabia on energy and fighting terrorism.
Among the steps: Saudi Arabia will join 70 partner nations of a global initiative to fight nuclear terrorism, and will join more than 85 countries participating in an initiative intended to reduce the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
In exchange, the White House said, the United States will help the Saudis develop civilian nuclear power, as well as new infrastructure to safeguard its energy supplies.
