Warner music back in You tube?
Warner Music, which had removed its videos from YouTube after licensing talks with Google broke down last year, just announced that is has reached a new deal with YouTube and that Warner's music videos will once again appear on YouTube. The partnership, according to the official announcement, covers the complete Warner catalog and "includes user-generated content containing WMG acts." Warner will be able to monetize user-generated content thanks to Google's Content ID technology, which can detect copyrighted content in YouTube videos and then allow the copyright holders to sell ads against this inventory.
According to Google, the partnership is based on a revenue-sharing deal. Thanks to this deal, YouTube users will now have access to videos from all the major record labels and most of the major independent labels as well.[...]

Slaying of Annie Le
No charges were filed against 24-year-old Raymond Clark III in Middletown, but police took him into custody while searching for DNA and other physical evidence.
Police and FBI agents staged a dramatic raid on the home of a Yale University animal research technician on Tuesday, seeking evidence that might tie him to the slaying of a graduate student whose body was found stuffed behind a wall in a campus research building.

Five Months is too long to wait, indeed!

We should not wait five months to find a replacement of one member of the cabinet who is already gone.
How I wish I know more about politics so I, myself would be able to understand why we should wait?!

Why skilled immigrants fleeing the U.S.?
Lured by the prospect of climbing to the top of his field, New Delhi native Swaroop Ganguly came to the U.S. 10 years ago and earned a Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 2005.
He became an expert in an emerging technology called spintronics, used to power semiconductors, and worked at several chip companies, including Freescale Semiconductor. But Ganguly, now 32, is moving back to India this summer.

Stimulus advancing health reform
Obama team sees stimulus advancing health reform
In the legislation passed late Friday, Congress approved spending about $19 billion over the coming years on electronic health records and an additional $1.1 billion on research comparing which treatments work best for a particular disease. Also, the bill sets aside about $1 billion for a "prevention and wellness fund." About $300 million of that money would provide additional immunizations. Most of the rest of that money will go to state and communities to help them tackle smoking, obesity and various preventable health problems.
"This represents the beginning steps of the president's health reform vision," said Jenny Backus, a spokeswoman for the Health and Human Services Department. "It's designed to get relief to people who need it most and to do everything we can to bring down the cost of health care, and improve access and quality." [readmore...

Jorge "Papito" Serguera who banned the Beatles is 'DEAD'

HAVANA (Reuters) - The man who banned the Beatles from the communist-run island's radio and television stations has died, state television said on Tuesday.
Jorge "Papito" Serguera, who at the time was president of the Cuban Institute of Radio and Television, pulled Beatles music from the airwaves in the 1970s even though he later admitted he enjoyed listening to it in private.
Serguera, who was 76 when he died, said in a 2001 interview he was following orders from high government officials who viewed the British band's music as a threat to the revolution.
But he was viewed as an architect of a general cultural crackdown that dampened dissent and marginalized many for their beliefs or sexuality.[read more]

Former Bush administration staffers disputed the tone of a Washington Post story published Thursday that described a tech-savvy Obama team moving into a building equipped with creaky computers, out-of-date software, no e-mail service and dead phone lines.
Rather, the former staffers said, the White House has everything a modern corporate office would — Windows XP, BlackBerrys, Outlook e-mail, plenty of laptops and lots of flatscreen monitors and TVs.
"It's a shame if they're having problems moving in," said Theresa Payton, White House chief information officer from 2006 until this past November. "We began to prepare for the transition well ahead of the election cycle. Our aim was to leave it in better shape than we found it."[read more...]

Womens Health

Oh, how true!

The problem: Narrowing arteries
Heart disease scores as a top-three killer of women in this age group.
The fix: Grab a handful of grapes every day. Antioxidants in red grape skins have been linked to lower LDL cholesterol and a lowered risk of clogged arteries. A glass of red wine is beneficial too. In a Spanish study, scientists found that red wine significantly reduced markers of arterial inflammation. The booze also helps prevent clots, just as a daily aspirin does. Cheers!

No Joint European Strategy On Banks
Washington Post Foreign Service Sunday, October 5, 2008; Page A01
PARIS, Oct. 4 -- The leaders of Europe's four largest economic powers vowed Saturday to protect their banks from the continuing reverberations of the increasingly global financial crisis but could not agree on a common Europe-wide strategy.
Unlike the United States, which last week committed $700 billion in government money to shoring up Wall Street, Europe plans to continue dealing with its financial problems on a case-by-case basis. That approach, which has involved tens of billions of dollars at a step, is complicated by the transnational presence of so many large European financial institutions.
But the European leaders did call for a global economic summit by year's end aimed at revamping the international financial system, which is a legacy of a conference held at Bretton Woods, N.H., in the waning months of World War II. [Read more...]

Discarded medications end up in drinking water
U.S. hospitals and long-term care facilities annually flush millions of pounds of unused pharmaceuticals down the drain, pumping contaminants into America's drinking water, according to an ongoing Associated Press investigation.
These discarded medications are expired, spoiled, over-prescribed or unneeded. Some are simply unused because patients refuse to take them, can't tolerate them or die with nearly full 90-day supplies of multiple prescriptions on their nightstands.
Few of the country's 5,700 hospitals and 45,000 long-term care homes keep data on the pharmaceutical waste they generate. Based on a small sample, though, the AP was able to project an annual national estimate of at least 250 million pounds of pharmaceuticals and contaminated packaging, with no way to separate out the drug volume. HELP!
Federal and state officials will make sure consumers don't get gouged by gas price increases in the wake of Hurricane Ike, President Bush said Saturday.
A large number of refineries shut down on the Gulf Coast ahead of the storm, pushing prices up in some regions.
In a brief televised statement, Bush said the Environmental Protection Agency waivers on certain reformulated gasolines were suspended Friday night to make it easier for imports to get into U.S. markets. [Readmore---]

U.K becoming abortion capital of the world.
They say our termination rate is already higher than any other western European country.
If the current trend continues, Britain is on course to overtake the U.S. and Australia as the place where the greatest proportion of pregnancies are terminated.
Nadine Dorries MP is leading calls for a cut in the upper time limit for so-called "social" abortions from 24 weeks to 20.
She said this would stop 2,500 terminations a year taking place.
"We have reached the point where we need to pull back on abortion," she said.
"If we don't there is no question that we will overtake America in the next couple of years, making us the abortion capital of the world."
Mrs Dorries plans to table an amendment to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill in the Commons this month.
Her campaign to cut the upper limit from 24 to 20 weeks is said to have the support of 200 MPs.
However, it will only be able to overturn the law if at least 200 others abstain.
In England and Wales, there were 193,700 abortions last year - a rate of 18.3 per 1,000 women aged 15 to 44. In the U.S., the rate has been falling steadily for almost three decades, and it now stands at 19.4 per 1,000 women.
In France the figure is 14.5, in Germany it is 7.2 and Italy 9.1 - all lower than the UK.
The only other major Western country with a higher abortion rate than Britain is Australia - but, like the U.S., the level there is currently declining.
However, there are high rates of abortion in former Communist countries such as Ukraine.
Peter Saunders, of the Christian Medical Fellowship, said there had been an "awakening of the public conscience over abortion" in the U.S.
"By contrast in the UK we have embraced ever more tightly the same tired formula of values-free sex education, condoms and more abortion services," he added. Continue reading---

GWBush plea
On Friday, the White House announced a series of initiatives meant to increase the partnership between the United States and Saudi Arabia on energy and fighting terrorism.
Among the steps: Saudi Arabia will join 70 partner nations of a global initiative to fight nuclear terrorism, and will join more than 85 countries participating in an initiative intended to reduce the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
In exchange, the White House said, the United States will help the Saudis develop civilian nuclear power, as well as new infrastructure to safeguard its energy supplies.
